This seminar was the first event of the 18-month bilateral project "European Standards in Civil and Criminal Proceedings."

Prominent Dutch experts took part in the seminar: lawyers Willem Bekkers, member of IBA and Mikhail Wladimiroff, member of the Bar of the Supreme Court of the Netherlands, Vice-President National Committee to Review Criminal Cases, and judge Ruth van der Pol from Court of Appeal, Leeuwarden.

The seminar was attended by 40 Russian lawyers, members of the Lawyers Chambers of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region.

Key speakers presented the following topics:

Brief outline of the Dutch legal system and the structure of the Judiciary. The Dutch Bar. General problems in the practice of Dutch criminal law in relation to the ECHR.

Legal practice in Russia and the market of legal services. The problem of applying judicial precedent in the Russian legal system. The role of a court-appointed lawyer in civil proceedings in the context of the right to a fair trial. The role of a lawyer in criminal proceedings; basic problems arising for the defence during a trial.
