Round Table “Practice of NGOs providing legal aid to the public”

On 29 April 2014, a round table was held to discuss the experiences of NGOs in providing legal assistance to the public. Researchers, NGO workers, experts in legal aid and a representative of the Ombudsman’s Office for St Petersburg took part in the discussion.

The findings of the study conducted in six Subjects of the Northwest Federal Region were presented by Lubov Ezhova and Elena Raiskaya from the Centre for Independent Social Research. They talked about various practices of providing free legal aid by NGOs in the Northwest Region.
Other speakers were Elena Shakhova (Citizens’ Watch), Dmitry Shabelnikov and Olga Shepeleva (Global Network for Public Interest Law, Moscow office), Sergei Trutnev (Perm Region Human Rights Centre), and Arkady Gutnikov (St. Petersburg Institute of Law named after Prince P.G. Oldenburgsky).

The participants discussed the necessity to develop standards of providing legal assistance to the public and the prospects of the adoption of a new federal law that would regulate legal aid and its influence on the NGO activities in this sphere.
